Sometimes life does not leave us with the future we planned. Dreams change, relationships shift, and the things we trusted begin to fall apart. But what if the pieces that remain are not worthless wreckage? What if God can use them to help us move forward?

Excerpt from Making It on Broken Pieces: Finding Purpose When Life Doesn’t Go According to Plan Chapter 5: “When All You Have Left Are Pieces”
Little by little, with each stroke, the shore that once felt distant starts to get closer. You are tired. Your arms ache. The water is still cold. But even in your tiredness, something is different now. What once felt impossible now seems within reach.
The pieces you thought were just signs of loss became rafts that helped you get through. What seemed like wreckage turned out to be your lifeline. What felt like the end became a way forward.
And then, at last, your feet touch solid ground.
You make it to the shore not because the ship made it. It’s not because everything went back to how it was before, either.
Instead, it’s because God showed you how to keep going with what was left.
You arrive wet, exhausted, still remembering the storm—still alive. You are still here. You’re still moving toward your purpose.
So if life leaves you with only pieces, don’t look down on what’s left. You may not recognize it right away, but something is already happening. In the middle of what was lost, something is being revealed. And what you discover next will change how you see everything that came before.
Hold on to the part that’s still afloat.
A prayer. A promise. A friend. A child’s laughter. A wounded but living faith.
And trust that even broken pieces, when God is holding them, are enough to get you safely to shore.
